Dong Hoon Shin
Dr. Dong Hoon Shin is a leading expert in the study of mummies, with a special focus on mummies from South Korea and neighboring East Asian countries. His research focuses on mummification processes, funerary rituals and the daily life of individuals from ancient Asian civilizations. Using a wide range of scientific techniques, including histological, molecular and biochemical analyses, he examines the health conditions and diseases suffered by ancient populations, integrating medical findings with socio-cultural perspectives.
Dr. Shin is currently a professor in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Seoul National University. He has an extensive academic career, publishing in scientific journals and contributing to book chapters. He has also edited several volumes on mummy studies, forensic anthropology and archaeological investigation of ancient human remains. He was named a National Geographic Explorer in recognition of his work in reconstructing the lives of individuals of the Indus Valley Civilization. His recent research seeks to shed more light on the causes of death of East Asian mummies by incorporating interpretations drawn from historical records of the relevant period, as this subject is often difficult to fully elucidate by scientific analysis alone.
