First communication

We are pleased to invite you to the 11th World Congress on Mummy Studies (11WCMS) to be held in Cusco, ancient capital of the Inca Empire, from August 11 to 15, 2025. The venue of the event will be the Bartolome de las Casas Center located a few blocks from the Plaza de Armas. This social science research center has several auditoriums, comfortable spaces for the exchange of ideas and a hotel.

In the Andean worldview the ancestors do not die, but remain among us, helping us to live well, the Allin Kawsay: doing the right thing to live in harmony with everyone and with nature. Taking into account this aspect of Andean philosophy, the thematic axis of the 11WCMS seeks to emphasize the continuity of the transmission of the wisdom of our ancestors through the scientific study of mummies: our ancestors, in the materiality of their bodies, keep testimony of that good living, which, thanks to science, reaches the present as life lessons. What do the mallqui tell us about their ethnic and genetic diversity, their diet, their pharmacopoeia, their rituals and their seasonality? How can we know the degree of health or satisfaction of basic needs for each population and time? We call on our colleagues to rescue the message of the ancestors to contribute to the construction of a better world, from the level of individuals to that of ecosystems.

The official languages of the Congress will be Spanish and English. Papers may be presented as podium presentations or posters. We invite you to send us proposals for symposia in any of the modalities until June 30, at 11:59 pm, Peruvian time, topucp.

Proposals should contain the following information:

  • Symposium title and format (podium or poster)
  • Name, affiliation and e-mail address of the person(s) organizing the event
  • Abstract of a maximum of 300 words

In the 2nd circular, which will be sent on September 30, we will inform about the accepted symposia.

Cusco is a wonderful city, full of natural and historical-monumental attractions. An invitation is extended to all researchers and students of mummies to participate in this meeting, hoping that this instance will contribute to strengthen ties between the scientific community and the general population, heir to the wisdom of the ancestors.

Qusqupi qhawasunchis!

See you in Cusco!
